A Sociedade de Desenvolvimento do Porto de Maputo (MPDC) assinou um acordo estratégico com a Maputo Grain Terminal SA (MGT), em parceria com a MEREC Industries, para a expansão significativa da capacidade do terminal de cereais do Porto de Maputo. Este projecto visa aumentar a capacidade estática do terminal das actuais 25.000 toneladas para 45.000 toneladas, representando o aumento da capacidade instalada de 170 000 toneladas  para 350 000 toneladas por ano.

Nos últimos anos, o volume de cereais manuseados no Porto de Maputo tem crescido de forma consistente. Em 2023, o terminal atingiu um volume de 166.000 toneladas, reflectindo a crescente demanda por serviços de manuseamento de cereais na região. Com a expansão planeada, a próxima fase do projecto incluirá a ampliação dos serviços de manuseamento para outros produtores de cereais, bem como a exploração de novas oportunidades para a exportação e trânsito de cereais destinados a países vizinhos e ao mercado internacional.

O terminal actual é composto por cinco silos, cada um com uma capacidade de 5.000 toneladas. Com o novo acordo, a MGT planeia a construção de quatro silos adicionais, o que aumentará significativamente a capacidade de armazenamento. Além disso, está previsto um investimento na melhoria da infraestrutura ferroviária, visando optimizar a logística e a eficiência do terminal. O investimento total para a expansão do terminal está estimado em aproximadamente 5 milhões de dólares. O prazo previsto para a conclusão da construção dos novos silos é de 18 meses. Este investimento sublinha o compromisso da MPDC e dos seus parceiros em fortalecer a capacidade logística e a competitividade do Porto de Maputo no mercado regional e internacional, no âmbito do acordo de extensão de concessão assinado em Fevereiro deste ano.
