A empresa pública de electricidade de Moçambique, EDM, adquiriu 70 por cento das acções do projecto hidroeléctrico de Mphanda Nkuwa, no rio Zambeze, na província central de Tete.
O projecto de Mphanda Nkuwa envolve a construção de uma barragem a cerca de 60 quilómetros a jusante da barragem existente em Cahora Bassa, e uma central eléctrica que irá gerar 1.500 megawatts de electricidade. Haverá também uma linha de transmissão de alta tensão com uma extensão de 1.300 quilómetros do Vale do Zambeze até Maputo.
A construção da barragem e da central eléctrica está orçada em 5,5 mil milhões de dólares americanos. Durante a fase de construção, Mphanda Nkuwa empregará cerca de 7 mil trabalhadores e, uma vez gerada a energia, haverá 3 mil empregos permanentes, 95 por cento deles ocupados por moçambicanos.
Segundo o porta-voz do governo e vice-ministro da Justiça, Filimão Suaze, que falava, quinta-feira, em Maputo, após uma reunião do Conselho de Ministros (gabinete), a aprovação das participações da EDM em Mphanda Nkuwa é o primeiro passo para o funcionamento do projecto .
“Todos os outros passos subsequentes relacionados com esta matéria virão depois, mas foi necessário primeiro criar esta base que serve de guarda-chuva para todo o exercício a nível comercial”, disse.
Insistiu que todo o exercício deve ocorrer sem qualquer custo para o Estado moçambicano.
Em Dezembro passado, o consórcio internacional liderado pela empresa eléctrica francesa EDF assinou um acordo com o governo moçambicano para implementar o projecto hidroeléctrico. O consórcio também inclui uma segunda empresa francesa, a TotalEnergies, e a Sumitomo do Japão.
Numa primeira fase, o consórcio é responsável pela mobilização de 1,3 mil milhões de dólares, valor considerado crucial para o andamento do projecto.
Espera-se que as obras sejam concluídas até 2030.
