A Syrah Resources recebeu um empréstimo de 150 milhões de dólares da Corporação Financeira de Desenvolvimento Internacional dos Estados Unidos para apoiar o desenvolvimento da sua operação de grafite em Moçambique. Um desembolso inicial de US$ 73 milhões está previsto para novembro.

Num comunicado de imprensa esta semana, a mineradora australiana disse que utilizará o empréstimo para financiar as necessidades de capital do seu projecto de grafite em Balama.

O empréstimo será dividido em duas parcelas: uma parcela de US$ 100 milhões para a atual expansão de sua instalação de armazenamento de rejeitos e o potencial desenvolvimento de um recurso de vanádio; e uma parcela de US$ 50 milhões para a expansão de longo prazo da instalação de rejeitos.

Este empréstimo, o primeiro da DFC para um projeto de grafite, “demonstra ainda mais a importância de Balama, que é a maior operação integrada de mineração e processamento de grafite a nível mundial, para a estratégia de minerais críticos dos EUA”, afirmou o diretor-gerente e CEO da Syrah, Shaun Verner. .

A operação de Balama produz actualmente grafite a partir de uma reserva total de minério de 110 milhões de toneladas com teor de carbono de 16%. Este minério de alto teor é então processado em uma instalação de 2 milhões de toneladas por ano, produzindo aproximadamente 350.000 toneladas de grafite anualmente.
